Many Diplomats’ (and their families) biggest fears when serving abroad are being the target of terrorists attacks, being taken hostage or the very worse – being assassinated. One of those fears was realized today. I learned of this while sipping my coffee and scouring the morning news. My friends in Baltimore will just look at it as a vicious attack on our government. But for me — I had to tell my husband, who had just settled in with his morning brew, that a long time friend and colleague, Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, had died. I did not know Chris, but my husband’s silence all morning let me now how well he did, and how very sad this news made him. I too am at a loss for more words. Secretary Hilary Rodham Clinton’s statement will summarize this event for you.
